As the industry is changing, many of the companies dealing with waste management are faced with the challenge of sustenance in the future. Cities and households are largely reducing the amount of waste they generate and thereby reducing the amount of waste for which they pay companies to dispose of effectively. It presents a direct threat to Waste Management’s landfill business and relates to what steps the company must take to grow its revenue. Another problem relates to the customers’ behavior as they not only are reducing wastes they send to the landfills, but it is also important to sort, recycle and reuse. Therefore, the increasing costs of collecting and recycling the wastes may reduce revenue generation in the future. The challenge for the leadership in any situation as is in the case of Waste Management in Texas is to attain consensus within the organization to perform these duties .
Alternatives and decision criteria in this situation
The company is looking for alternative decisions, where the company can implement the idea of recyclability into creating consumer’s goods. Whenever products are disposed of, it is of value if the company can extract the value of those discarded things to use as raw materials in manufacturing new products. The company is working with other companies in designing with recyclability since it has more knowledge in the recycling process. The company also ensures expanding their e-waste management capacity to increase consumer’s responsibility and helps the manufacturers to take responsibility of their products . The issue that has been identified to be the main challenge is decision-making to ensure sustenance of the business operations. Faced with criticism, it may seem legitimate to respond to the critics’ claims. However, as a business organization, the focus needs to be on the development of alternatives that will help the organization not only develop solutions, but also enhance the image to stakeholders. Given the present situation, the focus of the organization should be on enhancement of waste management – recycling and reusing of waste. To be able to implement this strategy in the operations, the need is to reduce conflicts and develop consensus throughout the organization. However, alignment of the human resources for implementing the new strategy requires re-organization of available resources and development of new competencies among human resources, for which the priority is resolution of conflicts.
Conflict management or resolution in Waste Management – my priorities
As part of management of the company I will give patient hearing to everybody in relation to its customers’ and employees . There are three ways to respond to a conflict; dominance, compromise and integration. Dominance accounts for victory of one side over the other. In a compromise, each party has to give up something for the sake of significant lessening of friction. It sometimes makes the parties unsatisfied; where they have to give up something for values. Integration is the best way identified that ensures integration of the resources and intelligence of the organization innovatively. Integration will result in creating an ideal solution that reprimand no one and becomes the ideal basis for evolution towards a perfect equality. To achieve integration, I will be looking forward to introduce various forms of coordination within the organization . It accounts in straight contact between accountable people who have to carry out rules rather than hierarchical power. The reason behind selection of this alternative is that I strongly believe integration helps in resolving differences between groups. Uncovering helps in creative negotiations that will lead to re-evaluation of needs and benefits, which helps people to move from their positions to significance based thoughts .
Hence, I will be looking forward to evaluate the demands of public groups such as Sierra Club and understand the capabilities of my organization in meeting the requirements and expectations of society. It seems that one of the major conflicts have arisen from the inability to address the demands of society and focus group regarding the use of landfills. It becomes important for me to be able to develop and train the human resources so as to be able to implement recycling and reusing waste. Not only will I be able to help the organization enhance the image and re-instate confidence among stakeholders, the step taken by me will also enhance the development of sources of alternative revenue generation through recycling and re-using waste.
The study reveals that the environmental sustainability is the basis of successful business. As on e of the waste management companies worldwide, the actions and choices must have the potential to generate revenue and to ensure an improved world for future generations. This accounts in supplying renewable energy, creating lesser wastes and manufacturing products that will sustain people and environment. The customers are turning to the company not only to manage their wastes but also to create fewer wastes. The company has to change their business role to become a more active and essential part of the customers’ business frameworks. Creating the history of recycling and desecrate to energy know-how, the company is dynamically working with their consumers and suppliers to find pioneering ways to decrease waste production. The company turns wastes into energy or back into raw resources appropriate for re-use. The company needs to discover new expertise in altering wastes in substitute fuels and come across into wind, solar and other upcoming new knowledge in their landfill facilities.
