David Lubin School, Sacramento

In 2000, two parents of kindergarten children got together over coffee to talk about how they could volunteer at David Lubin Elementary to help increase the hands-on learning for children and improve the school environment at the same time. Out of this conversation came the school garden project.

Last year (2001-2002) the project kicked off with a commemorative tree planting ceremony. This “Peace Grove” will eventually evolve into a California native glen and study area.

This year (2002-3) the garden committee has focused on the creation of a teaching garden. With the help of two Master Gardeners the group has drafted a plan, created a budget and organized work days. A local Boy Scout recently completed his Eagle Scout project by building the arbors and boarder fencing for the garden. Students are now planting the boarder area with drought tolerant herbs. The next phase will involve laying the path material and constructing raised beds. Our annual science fair, which occurs each spring, will be assigned one bed for students who want to conduct plant/growing experiments.

This wonderful project is funded in part by the David Lubin Parent Teacher Group (PTG), individual donations and a grant from Sacramento "ENRICHES".
