Kennedy Gardens is a community garden that is used by the residents of Kennedy Estates
in the South Sacramento Area. Kennedy Estates is a Mercy Housing California affordable housing
apartment community. Kennedy Estates is home to more than 100 families and of those families, 15
participate in Kennedy Gardens. We are currently working on redeveloping the garden to better
meet the needs of the participants.
Sacramento Area Community Garden Coalition has
provided plans to divide the garden into 40 plots. The plans also include spaces for fruit
trees, shaded sitting areas and a garden for the students involved in Kennedy Estates after-school,
on-site tutoring program.
The aim of the redevelopment is to organize the garden to allow for more
residents to benefit from Kennedy Gardens. Other partners on this project are the Sacramento Hunger
Commission and the Master Gardeners of the UC Cooperative Extension of Sacramento County.
